Andrea’s Past Self

She is you, only ten years ago,

And is it so wrong I wanted to start over?

Touch light tan, stare into deep brown

Listen, lovely laughter or sweet scolds.

You had me in the palm of your hand

And squeezed

And squeezed.

I suppose you might say the same of me.

I had an imaginary commitment to you—

We said it one time, and that was enough.

I wonder if your younger you would

Hear my confession and forgive. Or regret

Ever knowing me like you. Maybe call the cops.

She, my former future and past all in one.

Thirteen years since we meant anything

Ten since I’ve seen you at the mall

Six since I’ve surrendered all hope

Three since I’ve been married

One chance I had and lost,

At least you.
