How can a teacher use the Socratic Method without leading the students? Whenever I see the Socratic Method in use, it appears to be not much more than manipulation of the student in order to indoctrinate. Socrates leads Polemarchus to a conclusion that seems to be that of the student, but “lead” is the most important word. The student was only able to discover that someone who has superior debating skills will win if they allow it to happen. Plato’s method of telling a biased story is not much different than what Socrates uses, and they both put forth their own agenda while being able to feign objectivity.
